A milestone moment for the City of Sails
The world’s toughest team sailing challenge, The Ocean Race, will return to Auckland in March 2027. This marks a special homecoming for an event that has been part of New Zealand’s maritime story for nearly 50 years.
Auckland first hosted the race in 1977–78, and since then has welcomed the world’s best offshore sailors 10 times. Kiwi legends such as Sir Peter Blake, Grant Dalton, Peter Burling, Blair Tuke, and Daryl Wislang have all made their mark in this iconic event.
What to Expect in 2027
- Ocean Live Park: A free two-week waterfront festival featuring boats, crews, entertainment, and sustainability showcases.
- Education & Ocean Health: Programmes with NZ schools to grow ocean literacy and support the UN Ocean Decade.
- A Boost for Auckland: The government will invest up to $4 million to support the event, bringing global attention and economic benefits.
A Global Journey
The 2027 edition will start in Alicante, Spain, travel through the Southern Ocean to Auckland, and finish in Amaala, Red Sea. More host cities will be announced soon.
Auckland’s return as a stopover reaffirms its status as the true “City of Sails” and a beloved home of this legendary race.
